The short answer

Choose around the crosscuts you repeat. A sled and an aftermarket miter gauge solve overlapping problems but impose different demands on storage, fit and setup. Neither deserves a recommendation solely because the supplied gauge disappointed you.

The original workshop experience

Our original 4100 review described frequent use of a homemade sled with a 3/4-inch MDF base and oak runners. The owner reported clean results and disliked the supplied miter gauge’s fit and adjustment. Those historical observations motivate this comparison; they are not a new head-to-head test.

The old account is not a construction plan. A complete sled design needs its own consideration of clearances, workholding, blade coverage and intended use.

Choose by the operation

Do not buy on slot width alone

Confirm the complete fit and intended configuration with the accessory manufacturer. A compatible-looking bar does not establish that the whole assembly clears the saw and supports the work you have in mind.

Compare the full package and any additions required. An attractive gauge price may not include the fence arrangement shown in a demonstration.

What to measure before choosing a winner

Useful evidence would show repeated cuts in the same stock, how squareness was checked, the setup time and the storage arrangement. Without that comparison, we can explain the decision but cannot honestly award an accuracy winner.

If the trouble concerns ripping rather than crosscutting, see the fence guide. If large workpieces are the issue, continue to support and shop space.
